Butler Academy’s Chinese New Year Celebration: A Culmination of Language, Culture, and Belonging

At Butler Academy, we believe that learning a language is more than just memorizing words—it’s about embracing a culture, understanding its traditions, and building a sense of belonging across communities. Since our founding, Mandarin has been a core part of our curriculum now from kindergarten through 8th grade, allowing our scholars to develop both linguistic skills and a deep appreciation for Chinese culture. This year, all that learning and passion came to life in a spectacular Chinese New Year celebration!

A Celebration of Learning and Culture

The event was a beautiful showcase of the dedication our scholars have put into their Mandarin studies over the years. Classes took to the stage to sing traditional Chinese songs—entirely in Mandarin—demonstrating their language proficiency and confidence. The melodic voices of our scholars filled the space, creating an atmosphere of joy and cultural appreciation.

The celebration also featured stunning performances, including elegant fan dances that highlighted the grace and beauty of traditional Chinese art forms. Our scholars moved in perfect harmony, their vibrant fans creating mesmerizing patterns that reflected the spirit of the holiday.

The Grand Finale: A Student-Led Dragon Dance

No Chinese New Year celebration is complete without the iconic dragon dance, and our scholars did not disappoint! With a giant red dragon weaving through the crowd, the performance was a powerful and exhilarating finale. This student-driven effort was made possible with the guidance and support of two incredible teachers, Chi Ma, and Zhengyang Yu, whose dedication has been instrumental in our Mandarin program’s success.

More Than a Celebration—A Lesson in Belonging

This event was more than just a cultural showcase; it was a testament to our BRAVE Core Values, especially the value of Belonging. Our scholars weren’t just learning about a culture—they were experiencing it, celebrating it, and honoring it as a community. This celebration reminded us all that understanding and appreciating different cultures strengthens our connections and broadens our perspectives.

As we reflect on this incredible experience, we are filled with pride in our scholars and gratitude for our dedicated educators. The journey of learning Mandarin at Butler Academy has not only expanded language skills but also deepened cultural appreciation—a gift that will stay with our scholars for years to come.

Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐 (Xīnnián kuàilè)!
